Talking with My Mouth Full: My Life as a Professional Eater
by Gail Simmons
Hyperion | February 2012 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 1401324509 | ePUB/PDF | 26.3/4.74 mb
http://www.amazon.com/Talking-My-Mouth-Full-Professional/dp/B0099JAI0A
When Top Chef judge Gail Simmons first graduated from college, she felt hopelessly lost. All her friends were going to graduate school, business school, law school . . . but what was she going to do? Fortunately, a family friend gave her some invaluable adviceΓÇömake a list of what you love to do, and let that be your guide. Gail wrote down four words:
Eat. Write. Travel. Cook.
Little did she know, those four words would become the basis for a career as a professional eater, cook, food critic, magazine editor, and television star. Today, she's the host of Top Chef: Just Desserts, permanent judge on Top Chef, and Special Projects Director at Food & Wine magazine. She travels all over the world, eats extraordinary food, and meets fascinating people. She's living the dream that so many of us who love to cook and eat can only imagine. But how did she get there?
Talking with My Mouth Full follows her unusual and inspiring path to success, step-by-step and bite-by-bite. It takes the reader from her early years, growing up in a household where her mother ran a small cooking school, her father made his own wine, and family vacation destinations included Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East; through her adventures at culinary school in New York City and training as an apprentice in two of New York's most acclaimed kitchens; and on to her time spent assisting Vogue's legendary food critic Jeffrey Steingarten, working for renowned chef Daniel Boulud, and ultimately landing her current jobs at Food & Wine and on Top Chef.
The book is a tribute to the incredible meals and mentors she's had along the way, examining the somewhat unconventional but always satisfying journey she has taken in order to create a career that didn't even exist when she first started working toward it.
With memorable stories about the greatest (and worst) dishes she's eaten, childhood and behind-the-scenes photos, and recipes from Gail's family and her own kitchen, Talking with My Mouth Full is a true treat.

Archaeology is the best tool we have for solving the mysteries of ancient life. In this book, you will learn about how archaeologists work and what they have discovered so far about the past, from the earliest humanlike creatures a few million years ago all the way up to about 100 years ago. YouΓÇÖll also have a chance to do some fun activities that will help you understand archaeology and the amazing cultures that have been uncovered underfoot.
This activity book features 25 projects such as making a surface survey of a site, building a screen for sifting dirt and debris at a dig, tracking soil age by color, and counting tree rings to date a find, teaches kids the techniques that unearthed Neanderthal caves, TutankhamunΓÇÖs tomb, the city of Pompeii, and Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec empire. Kids will delight in fashioning a stone-age tool, playing a seriation game with old photographs of cars, ΓÇ£readingΓÇ¥ objects excavated in their own backyards, and using patent numbers to date modern artifacts as they gain an overview of human history and the science that brings it back to life.

Chess Endgames (gnv64)
Chess: Endgames (translated from Hungarian)
by Laszlo Polgar
Konemann | December 2002 | ISBN-10: 3829005075 | PDF | 1159 pages | 67.6 mb
http://www.amazon.com/Chess-Endgames-Laszlo-Polgar/dp/3829005075
Young chess players (and occasionally their coaches, too) often make the mistake of concentrating all their efforts on openings. However, no progress can be made without a thorough knowledge of endgames, as an opening might immediately lead to an end; and no middlegame problems can be properly solved without keeping the endgame in mind. Mistakes in openings or middlegames may, perhaps, be corrected later, but those in the last stage can be fatal.
In the present book, 4560 positions are divided into 171 chapters. The first ones give several hundred examples to illustrate the most important elementary and theoretical positions. The following 169 chapters concentrate on various strategic and tactical ideas and structures, each demonstrated by 24 positions.
The first 300 problems in this book are akin to basic endgames in a modest book. The problems gain in difficulty - should you finish the book your endgame ability will be at International Master level.John Nunn's books or endgame CDs then may take you to Grandmaster level - but those are to difficult for most players. Laszlo's comprehensive books show his devotion to chess and its' teaching.
Laszlo is the father of the famous Polgar sisters - Zsuzsa, Sofia & Judith.

Scientific Exploration and Expeditions (gnv64)
Scientific Exploration and Expeditions: From the Age of Discovery to the Twenty-first Century
by Neil A. Hamilton
M E Sharpe Reference | August 2010 | ISBN-10: 0765680769 | PDF | 320 pages | 11.3 mb
Hamilton's 115 entries in this set describe the courses and discoveries of significant scientific expeditions from the early 15th century to mid 2009. Chapters range in content from ΓÇ£Discovery, Age ofΓÇ¥ to ΓÇ£Maps and Mapmaking.ΓÇ¥ Along with describing the accomplishments of, for example, Charles Darwin, Neil Armstrong, and Heinrich Schliemann, the author discusses the work of the Leakey family, the lesser-known journeys of explorers such as Mary Kingsley and Mexican-American botanist Ynes Mexia, and the spectacular if sometimes stuntlike adventures of Richard Francis Burton, Thor Heyerdahl, and Robert Ballard. Each chapter opens with a time line and closes with a brief further-reading list. Many also feature a relevant side essay, ΓÇ£seeΓÇ¥ references, and one or more small, muddy black-and-white prints or photos. The prose is as staid as the book design, but aside from occasional slips (such as a bald claim that Burton ΓÇ£discovers Lake TanganyikaΓÇ¥), the presentations are systematic, carefully detailed, not exclusively Eurocentric, and when appropriate, skeptical. The currency of information and focus on science will make this work particularly useful alongside such broader but more dated resources as Peggy Saari and Daniel B. Baker's multivolume Explorers and Discoverers from Alexander the Great to Sally Ride
Although many geographic expeditions and explorations were designed to increase the sphere of influence of a particular nation, the participants often included doctors, scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and others who were able to observe and collect scientific data. These alphabetically arranged volumes contain 56 entries for explorers (Darwin, Charles; Perry, Robert E.); expeditions (Lewis and Clark expedition; Space exploration, manned); locations (Arctic, Pacific explorations); institutions (International Geophysical Year, National Geographic Society); and similar topics. The goal is ΓÇ£to provide an embarkation point for a wide-ranging investigation into the history of scientific exploration from the Age of Discovery to the twenty-first century.ΓÇ¥ Each entry begins with a chronology and may include photos, maps, and illustrations as well as a list of recommended resources and see also references. A list of sidebars explaining specific topics (for example, ΓÇ£Building the Kon-TikiΓÇ¥ in the entry about Thor Heyerdahl) is included at the beginning of volume 1, along with a table of contents and a topic finder. A glossary, bibliography, and index are found at the end of the second volume. Although many general researchers will find this information helpful, the set will be most useful for students in high school. Recommended for school and public libraries.

The 1950s Kitchen (gnv64)
The 1950s Kitchen (Shire Library)
by Kathryn Ferry
Shire | May 2011 | ISBN-10: 0747808279 | ePUB/PDF | 6.7/9.5 mb
The 1950s was the first great age of the modern kitchen: labor-saving appliances, bright colors and the novelty of fitted units moved the kitchen from dankness into light, where it became the domain of the happy housewife and the heart of the home. Formica - a new space-age material - decorated with fashionable patterns topped sleek cupboards that contained new classic wares such as Pyrex and 'Homemaker' crockery, and the ingredients for 1950s British staples: semolina, coronation chicken and spotted dick.
Electricity entered the kitchens of millions, and nowhere in the home was modern technology and modern design more evident. Bold color, clean lines and stainless steel were keynotes of the decade, and it is no surprise that 1950s kitchen style is now the height of fashion once again, with names like Cath Kidston picking up on the best of '50s kitchen kitsch, and manufacturers like Dualit, Kitchen Aid and Aga doing healthy business with retro appliances.
This book - a celebration of cooking, eating and living in the 1950s kitchen - is a feast of nostalgia, and a mine of inspiration for anyone wanting to recreate that '50s look in their own home.
About the Author
Kathryn is a historian, writer and lecturer who has also worked as Senior Architectural Adviser to the Victorian Society. Besides architecture and design her other great interests are the seaside and the social history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. AN UNTIMELY RETURN
'We're passing through on our way back to the Solar System. May we commence manoeuvres?'
'What - but - But everybody expected you'd be gone for years!'
'We were.'
'No. I witnessed your transit. That was, uh, five months ago, no more.'
'For us, approximately eight Terrestrial years have passed...'
So begins the nightmare homecoming of the spaceship Emissary, returning to Earth following a successful voyage of discovery. But the Emissary has returned to a terrifying and different new world more alien than the horrors of wandering in the infinities of space and time...

His classic SF novels include Brain Wave, The High Crusade, Tau Zero, The Enemy Stars and The Earthbook of Stormgate. This novel was published over 30 years back. My reprint is over 20 years old. The movie, unrelated to this novel, came much later. This tightly bound paperback was pretty difficult to scan but I have tried my best. It is my gift to the lovers of 80s sci-fi (like me)!
